Kitchen Vastu: Best Direction, Stove & Sink Placement (and How to Plan a Modern Kitchen Around It)

A good number of our Delhi NCR clients ask about Vastu in the very first meeting. Some follow it strictly. Others only want to avoid obvious "don'ts". Both are fine. Our job is to help you design a kitchen that is comfortable to cook in and respects the guidance you care about.
This guide explains the common Vastu rules for kitchens in plain language, and shows how to adapt them when your flat's layout is already fixed.
A note on Vastu: Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of building design. It is based on belief and practice, not on scientific testing, and practitioners sometimes differ. Use this guide as a planning reference, and speak to your own Vastu consultant if you follow it closely.
What is the best direction for a kitchen as per Vastu?
The south-east is the best direction for a kitchen, because it is linked to the fire element (Agni). The north-west, linked to air, is the next best option. Vastu usually advises against placing a kitchen in the north-east, which is associated with water and prayer, or in the south-west.
| Position | Vastu view |
|---|---|
| South-east | Ideal |
| North-west | Acceptable |
| South | Acceptable with adjustments |
| North-east | Usually avoided |
| South-west | Usually avoided |
Which direction should you face while cooking?
Vastu suggests facing east while you cook. If east is not possible, many practitioners accept west. Facing south is generally avoided. In a modular kitchen, this is decided by where you place the hob and the worktop in front of it.
Where should the stove and sink go?
The core principle is that fire and water should not sit next to each other. Keep the stove (fire) and sink (water) apart, with a clear stretch of counter between them. In a small kitchen, a gap of at least 60 cm also helps with practical prep space.
| Element | Traditional Vastu guidance | Modern workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Stove / hob | South-east of the kitchen; person faces east | If the kitchen is in another corner, place the hob on the south-east wall of the kitchen itself |
| Sink | North-east side of the kitchen; away from the stove | Place the sink on the opposite run, or leave a counter gap between the two |
| Refrigerator | South-west or north-west | Choose a tall housing unit on the west or south side |
| Heavy storage (grains, atta) | South or west walls | Use the tall pantry wall on the south or west side |
| Water filter / RO | North-east | Keep it near the sink, on the north or east wall |
| Exhaust / chimney | East or south-east wall | Match the chimney to the hob wall |
| Microwave and electrical appliances | South-east | Keep appliances away from the sink |
What are Vastu-friendly kitchen colours?
Traditional guidance favours soft yellow, orange, light green, cream and warm wood tones, because they link to fire and earth energy. Black is often avoided. These colours suit Indian kitchens anyway: warm, light and easy to keep clean. For finish options, see our materials page.
What if your flat's kitchen is in the "wrong" place?
Most buyers cannot move the kitchen in a flat. You still have choices:
- Work within the room. Even a kitchen in the north or west has its own south-east corner. Place the hob there.
- Fix the cooking direction. Turn the hob position so you face east.
- Separate fire and water. Put the sink on a different wall from the hob.
- Use colour and materials. Warm finishes, like pale oak or cream, are easy to apply.
- Ask your consultant. Many Vastu experts offer practical corrections that do not need demolition.
Do not break structural walls or move plumbing stacks only for Vastu. It can cost a lot and may violate society rules.
How to plan a modern modular kitchen with Vastu in mind
Good planning handles both Vastu and ergonomics, such as the work triangle between sink, hob and fridge. Our tips:
- Draw the Vastu zones on your floor plan first. Mark the south-east, north-east and so on before choosing cabinets.
- Decide hob and sink positions before anything else. All other cabinets follow.
- Use tall units where Vastu favours heavy storage. Pantry walls on the south or west side keep grains and heavy items in the right zone.
- Plan the chimney with the hob. The duct route should be short and straight.
- Check the layout. L-shaped and parallel layouts offer the easiest ways to separate the stove and sink. For layout choices, read our guide on kitchen design ideas for Indian homes.

Common kitchen Vastu mistakes
- Placing the stove and sink side by side.
- Putting the hob under a beam or directly opposite the main door.
- Using black granite on the whole worktop in a small, dark kitchen.
- Storing grains in the north-east.
- Leaving the kitchen with no ventilation, whatever the direction.
Note that good ventilation is more important than any direction. A smoky, airless kitchen is a problem in every system.

Frequently asked questions
Which direction is best for a kitchen as per Vastu?
South-east is best. North-west is the next best.
Can the kitchen be in the north-east?
Vastu generally advises against it, because north-east is associated with water and prayer. If you have no choice, consult a Vastu expert for remedies.
Which way should I face while cooking?
East is preferred. West is often accepted as an alternative.
Can the stove and sink be on the same counter?
Ideally not. Keep them apart with a gap of counter space, or place them on different walls.
What colour is best for a kitchen in Vastu?
Soft yellow, orange, cream, light green and warm wood tones. Black is usually avoided.
Does a modular kitchen follow Vastu?
Yes. A modular kitchen is built to your plan, so the hob, sink, fridge and storage can be placed according to Vastu zones.
