Small Modular Kitchen Design: 12 Space-Saving Ideas for Indian Apartments (2026)

Most flats in Delhi NCR come with a kitchen of 6 x 8 ft to 8 x 10 ft. That is enough to cook for a family, if every inch is planned. The difference between a cramped kitchen and a comfortable one is rarely the size of the room. It is the planning inside it.
Below are 12 ideas that work in real Indian apartments, plus simple storage maths you can check with a tape measure.
What is the best layout for a small kitchen?
The best layout depends on the shape of the room, not your preference. Use this table as a starting guide.
| Your kitchen | Best layout | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow and long (for example 5 x 10 ft) | Parallel (galley) or one-wall | Two runs or one run keep walkways short |
| Almost square (for example 8 x 8 ft) | L-shaped | Uses two walls and keeps the middle free |
| Small with a window on one wall | L-shaped with the sink under the window | Natural light on the wash area |
| Very small (under 50 sq ft) | One-wall with tall units | Frees floor space for movement |
| Open to a living room | L-shaped with a slim peninsula | Gives a counter without taking floor area |

12 space-saving small kitchen ideas
1. Go vertical with tall units
A tall unit that runs from floor to ceiling stores as much as three normal base cabinets. Put your dry grocery, cookware and appliances here. Ask for the top shelf to have a pull-down or step stool, so the highest space is still usable.
2. Choose wall units 300 to 350 mm deep
Standard wall units are shallow for a reason: you can reach the back and they do not hit your head. Take them up to the ceiling to avoid a dusty gap on top.
3. Fix the corner
A blind corner can waste nearly half the cabinet. A carousel tray, a swing-out shelf or a pull-out corner unit makes the whole space usable. This single upgrade is often worth more than extra cabinet length.
4. Use full-extension drawers instead of shelves
In base units, drawers beat doors. You see everything at once and nothing disappears at the back. Soft-close drawers from Blum or Hettich are quiet and last for years; see why hardware matters.
5. Pick light, matte finishes
Light colours reflect light and make the room feel bigger. Matte surfaces hide fingerprints and oil marks. Pale oak, off-white and soft grey are safe choices. Browse finishes on our materials page.
6. Use one continuous countertop colour
A single, uninterrupted worktop and backsplash makes the kitchen look calmer and larger. A quartz or sintered stone slab with minimal joints also wipes clean fast.
7. Add under-cabinet LED lighting
A dark worktop makes any kitchen feel small. LED strips under wall units light up the surface where you actually work and add depth to the room.
8. Build the chimney into the design
A hanging chimney eats visual space. A slim or built-in hood that matches the wall units keeps the line clean. Choose a hood wider than the hob.
9. Keep the sink and hob apart
Even in a small kitchen, leave at least 60 cm of counter between the sink and the hob. This is your main prep area. If space is very tight, use a sink with a drainer cover that doubles as a chopping board.
10. Hide appliances
A tall cabinet with a sliding or lift-up front can hold the mixer, toaster and rice cooker. Clear counters are the cheapest way to make a small kitchen feel larger.
11. Use the kickboard
A plinth drawer, 100 to 150 mm high, can store baking trays, large plates and rarely used items. It costs almost no floor space.
12. Fold-down or slim breakfast ledge
If you cannot fit a table, a wall-mounted ledge or a 30 to 40 cm wide counter extension gives you a place for morning tea, without blocking movement.
How much storage can you really get? A simple storage check
Work out your storage in running feet:
- Measure the length of every wall that can hold cabinets.
- Subtract openings such as doors, windows and the hob.
- Multiply by the number of levels: base (1), wall (1), tall (counts as 2).
A 6 x 8 ft L-shaped kitchen with both walls fully used gives about 14 running feet of base and wall cabinet. If that is not enough for your family, add one tall unit before adding anything else. These numbers are a rough planning aid, not a promise; your designer will give exact figures after measuring.
Common mistakes in small kitchens
- Too many open shelves. They gather oil and dust. Use two at most.
- Dark colours on all sides. They shrink the room.
- Ignoring door swing. A fridge door that hits a cabinet door wastes a whole module. Check clearances on the drawing.
- Skipping the chimney plan. Decide the duct route early, or you will end up with exposed pipes.
- Buying loose furniture. Built-in units use the space edge to edge. Loose trolleys do not.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best layout for a small kitchen?
L-shaped, parallel or one-wall, depending on the room shape. L-shaped suits most near-square flats.
How can I make a small kitchen look bigger?
Use light matte colours, one continuous worktop, under-cabinet lighting and tall units that reach the ceiling.
What size is a small modular kitchen?
Usually 50 to 90 sq ft, such as 6 x 8 ft or 8 x 10 ft.
Is a modular kitchen worth it for a small space?
Yes. Factory-made modules use space edge to edge, which a small kitchen needs most.
How much clear space do I need between two counters?
About 1.0 to 1.2 metres in a parallel kitchen, so two people can pass and drawers can open.
How long does a modular kitchen take to install?
The full OPPEIN process, from design to installation, takes roughly 12 to 15 weeks, depending on the project scope.
